Timeriffic is one of those HTC Hero apps that you’ll need to configure just once and reap the benefits forever. This wonderful free app lets you build profiles that change your ring settings (mute, vibrate, etc.), brightness, Wi-Fi status, and other aspects of your smartphone taht kick in at specified times and conditions. So you can have your Wi-Fi automatically turned off to save battery every night at 10:00 PM, while turning your ringer to vibrate so you aren’t disturbed. These can be done concurrently, and you can create different profiles for different configurations (one for vacation perhaps).

The configuration options are very broad. For instance, you can set a profile to turn on every second weekday at 3:00 PM and 9:00 PM. These combinations allow for limitless options, and you can setup your Hero just the way you want it for optimum use. Changing things around and seeing which profile is active is pretty easy. It’s also very light on your battery, so it doesn’t drain your HTC Hero’s power as it makes changes based on your profiles. An innovative and powerful utility for the HTC Hero.

If you’re looking for a simple and effective RSS reader that syncs with your Google Reader account, look no further than Greed. It does two-way sync with your Google Reader account, so any changes on either of the accounts are reflected in the other immediately. As RSS readers go this one is very simple. You can star items, share them with friends (via your Google Reader sharing settings), and mark items as read or unread. Those are exactly the set of features that most people look for in an RSS reader.

Formatting is important in a mobile RSS reader, and Greed doesn’t fall short in this matter either. Text is clear and flows well around images and native formatting elements. Greed also works with your folders on the Google Reader account, faithfully representing them on your HTC Hero. New articles are clearly highlighted, and an unread count lets you know where you are running behind on your reading. A simple and highly effective RSS reader app for your Hero.

Facebook for Android is one of the more popular Facebook clients available for the HTC Hero. Some may consider it a shade less impressive than Bloo, but the latter is still in beta and has you jump through a few hoops before you can get it to run. This app on the other hand is very simple to get started with and presents the basic Facebook features without much ado. You can view, edit, and manage your profile, see walls, photos, and updates and have the app integrate with your Hero’s notifications.

The homescreen widget is very convenient and you can easily send updates without opening up the app every time. The interface is well-designed and easy-to-use, but there’s no way to customize aspects of it. For instance, the font and the color choices can appear a little washed-out, making it hard to read the app in bright light, even on the Hero’s excellent screen. Otherwise, it works quite well and is a good start if you’re looking for a basic Facebook experience on your Hero. If you’re a little more adventurous, give Bloo a shot.

SportsTap is a fully-featured sports application on the HTC Hero and Android. It lets you track your favorite teams, statistics, News, and schedules right from your Hero smartphone. The number of sports and championships supported on SportsTap is quite amazing – NHL, NBA, Nascar, MLB, NFL, … the list goes on. You can even add your own fantasy teams as well as any local leagues you may be interested in.

Each sport you are tracking is presented on a grid on the main screen. The app integrates will with your Android smartphone’s notification system – so you can configure it to ping you whenever a relatively important News bit arrives or when the scores change. There’s even a nice widget you can run on your homescreen that’ll show you your favorite team’s and related News without you needing to launch the app at all. SportsTap is a solid sports application for your HTC Hero.

TED on the HTC Hero is a window into the fascinating world of TED talks which are well-known for their insightful topics and innovative presentation formats. The app presents plenty of audio-visual material from the talks. You will have full access to the archives as well as bonus material with this HTC Hero app. The video and audio streaming is quite high-quality with no noticeable lags or stutters.

The interface is easy-to-use and pretty straightforward. Controls are presented at the bottom of the screen and videos are available in landscape mode. You can mark content by starring them as favorites and later pull them up in their own dedicated section. Unfortunately there isn’t a way to see popular content as rated by others, and there’s no way to discuss or otherwise interact with the content. Overall, this is an excellent app for consuming content from TED on the Hero.

Sherpa for the HTC Hero is a smart recommendation app that suggests activities and events based on your current location. The app learns your tastes and preferences as you use it, so if you frequent a specific coffee house, the app will notify you if you are close to a similar one (or the same chain) in another area. It also aggregates preferences from other users and suggests new locations based on the overlap with your own unique places. You can filter restaurants and other businesses based on proximity and category.

The interface is a little busy but very functional. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll begin to appreciate the wealth of features hidden in this app. You can see things of interest in three different ways – via a carousal interface, as a list, or on a simple map. Like most other local directory apps, Sherpa lets you see ratings, reviews, and other information concerning each establishment (including the address). The apps ability to learn your preferences as you go coupled with a powerful search feature that includes category-based filtering means that this app can easily replace all other local directory apps on your HTC Hero, and you won’t notice they’re gone.

ShopSavvy is a unique shopping and price comparison application for the HTC Hero and Android. It lets you focus your Hero camera on any barcode and pulls up the best prices and available stocks in your current location and online. You can simply point your camera at a barcode, follow the instructions and you’ll have a comprehensive product and price list right in your hand. The app pulls in data from thousands of retailers, so there’s little chance that you’ll find a product missing from its catalog. It even has a failure mode – if the barcode is smudged or otherwise unreadable, you can just search the database by title.

ShopSavvy lets you configure alerts that will notify you when a product you want drops below a certain price level. Like with Amazon, you can create wishlists and otherwise categorize your products and shopping needs. You can also see user reviews for products written by other ShopSavvy users like you. There’s also the ability to pull up older scanned items, so you can even use it as an inventory app if you please. This is a fantastic use of the HTC Hero’s excellent camera, and this free app will make shopping much more fun.

Locale is one of the most innovative HTC Hero apps out there. It lets you set a vast array of configurations based on your current location. That’s it. You can have your Hero change your ring tone the second you walk into your office, and have it switch it back to your very own embarrassing unprofessional one the minute you step out. Once you tell it where the local theaters are, you can have Locale automatically turn your ringer to silent when you’re watching a movie. The list goes on – everything from ringer volume, to the GPS radio can be configured.

You can set conditions for as many places as you like. You can even create conditions that depend on the time of day in addition to the location – so if you’re in university, you can have the ringer switch to vibrate just in your class hours and switch back on at other times even when you’re in the classroom. The interface is simple and easy-to-use, basically you set your conditions and forget about them. The app takes care of the rest. This award-winning Android app is a must-have for all HTC Hero owners.

Aloqa for the HTC Hero is a smart recommendation app that scans your local area and actively notifies you of interesting ongoing events and activities. Based on the set of categories you pick, the app will proactively inform you when parties, events, new restaurant openings and innumerable other activities take place. The “push” nature of Aloqa makes it relatively unique compared to other local directory apps. Unlike with the others, you can just leave your smartphone in your pocket and be notified when something happens or when you end up being near an interesting location.

Note that the number of notifications on your Hero can increase quickly as you begin to add categories. Some categories like the Starbucks one may trigger a notification every block (ha ha). However, since notifications specific to Aloqa are completely configurable, so you can have them remain unobtrusive if you prefer. Overall, this is an innovative addition to the local directory applications available on the Android market.

Layar on your smartphone is an augmented-reality app that adds a layer of information over your camera’s viewing field. This allows you to point your HTC Hero at an object or simply scan your environment and Layar will pull up information in real-time and presents it as transparency over the live image. It’s almost like a HUD, except that it’s in your phone. You can pick from a variety of layers in this app for each category. So there’s a Layar for restaurants and businesses, another for real-estate and so on. For instance, with the real-estate layer enabled, you can simply point your Hero at a series of apartment buildings and the app will pull up the rent, area, and other information.

There’s a little radar-like graphic in the app that let’s you know which direction you should point your HTC Hero to pick up points of interest. You can switch between an ordered view or a map view in addition to the layered view. Some of the layers offer interactive options including the ability to make a phone call with a single tap. “Layars” that already work include Google Local, Wikipedia, and Flickr.
