Sherpa for the HTC Hero is a smart recommendation app that suggests activities and events based on your current location. The app learns your tastes and preferences as you use it, so if you frequent a specific coffee house, the app will notify you if you are close to a similar one (or the same chain) in another area. It also aggregates preferences from other users and suggests new locations based on the overlap with your own unique places. You can filter restaurants and other businesses based on proximity and category.

The interface is a little busy but very functional. Once you get the hang of it, you’ll begin to appreciate the wealth of features hidden in this app. You can see things of interest in three different ways – via a carousal interface, as a list, or on a simple map. Like most other local directory apps, Sherpa lets you see ratings, reviews, and other information concerning each establishment (including the address). The apps ability to learn your preferences as you go coupled with a powerful search feature that includes category-based filtering means that this app can easily replace all other local directory apps on your HTC Hero, and you won’t notice they’re gone.

ShopSavvy is a unique shopping and price comparison application for the HTC Hero and Android. It lets you focus your Hero camera on any barcode and pulls up the best prices and available stocks in your current location and online. You can simply point your camera at a barcode, follow the instructions and you’ll have a comprehensive product and price list right in your hand. The app pulls in data from thousands of retailers, so there’s little chance that you’ll find a product missing from its catalog. It even has a failure mode – if the barcode is smudged or otherwise unreadable, you can just search the database by title.

ShopSavvy lets you configure alerts that will notify you when a product you want drops below a certain price level. Like with Amazon, you can create wishlists and otherwise categorize your products and shopping needs. You can also see user reviews for products written by other ShopSavvy users like you. There’s also the ability to pull up older scanned items, so you can even use it as an inventory app if you please. This is a fantastic use of the HTC Hero’s excellent camera, and this free app will make shopping much more fun.

Locale is one of the most innovative HTC Hero apps out there. It lets you set a vast array of configurations based on your current location. That’s it. You can have your Hero change your ring tone the second you walk into your office, and have it switch it back to your very own embarrassing unprofessional one the minute you step out. Once you tell it where the local theaters are, you can have Locale automatically turn your ringer to silent when you’re watching a movie. The list goes on – everything from ringer volume, to the GPS radio can be configured.

You can set conditions for as many places as you like. You can even create conditions that depend on the time of day in addition to the location – so if you’re in university, you can have the ringer switch to vibrate just in your class hours and switch back on at other times even when you’re in the classroom. The interface is simple and easy-to-use, basically you set your conditions and forget about them. The app takes care of the rest. This award-winning Android app is a must-have for all HTC Hero owners.

Aloqa for the HTC Hero is a smart recommendation app that scans your local area and actively notifies you of interesting ongoing events and activities. Based on the set of categories you pick, the app will proactively inform you when parties, events, new restaurant openings and innumerable other activities take place. The “push” nature of Aloqa makes it relatively unique compared to other local directory apps. Unlike with the others, you can just leave your smartphone in your pocket and be notified when something happens or when you end up being near an interesting location.

Note that the number of notifications on your Hero can increase quickly as you begin to add categories. Some categories like the Starbucks one may trigger a notification every block (ha ha). However, since notifications specific to Aloqa are completely configurable, so you can have them remain unobtrusive if you prefer. Overall, this is an innovative addition to the local directory applications available on the Android market.

Layar on your smartphone is an augmented-reality app that adds a layer of information over your camera’s viewing field. This allows you to point your HTC Hero at an object or simply scan your environment and Layar will pull up information in real-time and presents it as transparency over the live image. It’s almost like a HUD, except that it’s in your phone. You can pick from a variety of layers in this app for each category. So there’s a Layar for restaurants and businesses, another for real-estate and so on. For instance, with the real-estate layer enabled, you can simply point your Hero at a series of apartment buildings and the app will pull up the rent, area, and other information.

There’s a little radar-like graphic in the app that let’s you know which direction you should point your HTC Hero to pick up points of interest. You can switch between an ordered view or a map view in addition to the layered view. Some of the layers offer interactive options including the ability to make a phone call with a single tap. “Layars” that already work include Google Local, Wikipedia, and Flickr. Many more are on the way. Layar is one of the more futuristic HTC Hero Apps to hit the Android market.

SplashPlay presents a virtual guitar interface on your HTC Hero. It helps you learn and experiment with chords, notes, and other guitar-specific modes. If you’re practicing chords, the application interface shows virtual guitar strings with an overlay of where your fingers would go for each chord. The app comes with built-in tuition videos and modules, and you can create and upload your very own attempts. Notes and chords are displayed in parallel with playing music which can make learning so much easier.

.

You can also purchase a SplashPod that interfaces with this app and offers a wrapper around a real guitar fretboard. This wrapper highlights the correct strings and positions as you play the song on the app. SplashPlay comes with extensive tutorials and a good help interface that can get you going in minutes. Overall, this is a fantastic addition to any guitarists toolbox and a great app for those who are just starting out on the guitar.

CardioTrainer is a health and fitness app for the HTC Hero. You can use this Android app on your smartphone to track your workouts, calories, distance and elevation gains and several other fitness-related parameters. The app uses the Hero’s built-in GPS to track your routes and distances. These are integrated directly into a mapping view right in the application itself. CardioTrainer can announce various numbers and parameters to your headphones, so you won’t need to pull out your smartphone every time you want a tidbit of information.

.

Your data is saved as you use CardiTrainer and then sent to a server so that you can view your history online form a desktop computer. In addition to the history, you can view statistical information regarding your workouts, including average frequency and distance traveled. This HTC Hero app also lets you share some of your workout data via a Facebook application. CardioTrainer itself is free, but comes with an extra module for an extra charge. This is a solid health and fitness app for the HTC Hero, and is particularly useful if you do a lot of your workouts outdoors.

Pandora is an intelligent music streaming application on the HTC Hero. It learns your likes and dislikes based on feedback you give as each song is played. It then tries to tailor each radio stream based on what it learns about your tastes. You can also seed it with a given song or artist, and it will automatically play songs of a similar style and quality. This HTC Hero application also features a home screen widget that displays basic controls even when the app isn’t on top. You can create multiple playlists and stations with this app.

.

You can tweak various parameters in the settings section, including the quality of the streaming audio – you’d be trading-off between quality and stuttering basically. The streaming quality is quite good in both options and the buffering works perfectly. There is no ability to do an offline sync, and you can’t play songs when you don’t have a Wi-FI or cellular signal. Pandora works only in select countries at the moment, so using it while traveling is difficult. Overall, this is a popular music streaming application for Android that works really well and offers high-quality streaming music right to your HTC Hero.

Mobile Defense is a tracking and recovery app for the HTC Hero. This Android app lets you track the location of your smartphone in case it gets lost or stolen. This HTC Hero app can use both cellular triangulation as well as the GPS radio to discover your phones location – so even if your Hero is stolen and the GPS turned off, you’ll be able to pin-point the location with reasonable accuracy. having installed the app on your HTC Hero, you’ll be able to manage everything from an online interface.

.

In the online interface you can configure your settings such that you are notified when your HTC Hero changes state, including whenever your Hero gets locked and when a new SIM is inserted. The app also sends the phone number of the new SIM, which can come in really handy if you are planning to contact the authorities about the theft. The app is smart enough to remain well hidden in case the new owner tries to disable tracking apps. It also is relatively light on the battery, which is very useful in case of a lost device that is steadily losing battery power. This is one of the most useful HTC Hero apps, and one app that should be downloaded immediately after purchasing the device.
