Layar on the HTC Hero
Layar on your smartphone is an augmented-reality app that adds a layer of information over your camera’s viewing field. This allows you to point your HTC Hero at an object or simply scan your environment and Layar will pull up information in real-time and presents it as transparency over the live image. It’s almost like a HUD, except that it’s in your phone. You can pick from a variety of layers in this app for each category. So there’s a Layar for restaurants and businesses, another for real-estate and so on. For instance, with the real-estate layer enabled, you can simply point your Hero at a series of apartment buildings and the app will pull up the rent, area, and other information.

There’s a little radar-like graphic in the app that let’s you know which direction you should point your HTC Hero to pick up points of interest. You can switch between an ordered view or a map view in addition to the layered view. Some of the layers offer interactive options including the ability to make a phone call with a single tap. “Layars” that already work include Google Local, Wikipedia, and Flickr. Many more are on the way. Layar is one of the more futuristic HTC Hero Apps to hit the Android market.
